His company is in fierce competition with the second-best firm, Brock & Sons, led by his arch-rival, Tyler Brock. ![]() Dirk is the “Tai-Pan,” or leader of the Noble House, the richest trading company in Asia. The narrative follows the thrilling business adventures and political intrigue of a Scottish merchant, scrapper, opium smuggler and general charmer known as Dirk Straun. Set in 1841, the novel begins at an inflection point in the First Opium War between Great Britain and Imperial China, when the British had just secured the land that would become Hong Kong. Needless to say, Clavell produced yet another epic historical fiction adventure packed with exciting characters, harrowing themes, astonishing detail and a narrative you’ll contemplate long after you finish. ![]() After finishing “ Shōgun ,” I was eager to see how well author James Clavell would keep the momentum in “Tai-Pan” (1966), the second novel in his “Asian Saga” series. ![]()

This collection captures the frank eroticism and impressive eloquence that set her apart from the chaste, silent woman prescribed by Renaissance gender ideology.Īs an "honored courtesan", Franco made her living by arranging to have sexual relations, for a high fee, with the elite of Venice and the many travelers-merchants, ambassadors, even kings-who passed through the city. ![]() Veronica Franco (whose life is featured in the motion picture Dangerous Beauty) was a sixteenth-century Venetian beauty, poet, and protofeminist. ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments Lynsay sands the wrong highlander![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sands is skilled at crafting genuine characters with deep familial ties, but the plot slows down unnecessarily with all the updates on what has happened to each Buchanan couple since their own stories. There are a lot of Buchanan family members and friends to introduce to Evina, which detracts from the ostensibly central mystery of who wants Evina dead. As a widow who is still a virgin, Evina is a clich, and her falling in love with Conran is predictable. A cheerful jack-of-all-trades, Conran knows enough healing arts to keep up the charade and treat Evina's father. She needs Rory Buchanan to heal her ill father, so she hits him over the head and drags him unconscious all the way back home not realizing she actually has Rory's brother Conran in tow. When headstrong Lady Evina Maclean needs something, she takes action regardless of the consequences. Sands's seventh Highland Brides historical (after The Highlander's Promise) is only satisfying in the context of the series. ![]() 5/28/2023 0 Comments Bared to you by sylvia day![]() Eva's controlling mother and Gideon's very misterious family and you have a story that is very interesting, unpredictable and did I mention HOT! Bring in secondary stories about the bi-sexual, also insane but ridiculously gorgeous roommate that Eva has (Cary). The interesting thing is that their sexual abuse made them a little cookoo but did not affect their libido of sexual performance. Ginsburg: ""Oh, yes, we must take note of the first strange thing. At that hour, when it no longer seemed possible to breathe, when the sun was tumbling in a dry haze."" In any case, The Master and Margarita, a product of intense labor from 1928 till Bulgakov's death in 1940, is a distinctive and fascinating work, undoubtedly a stylistic landmark in Soviet literature, both for its aesthetic subversion of ""socialist realism"" (like Zamyatin, Bulgakov apparently believed that true literature is created by visionaries and skeptics and madmen), and for the purity of its imagination. The Bulgakov fantasy is less striking here, but less strident, too. His (Harper & Row) version is simpler, softer, and more humane. The battle of competing translations, a new publishing phenomenon which began with One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, now offers two rival American editions of Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita. ![]() 5/28/2023 0 Comments Ghosted book jm![]() This treaty conceded white settlement on land in the eastern part of what is now Montgomery County.
